Id like to provide a description of the 5-Liter water collectors I constructed to filter water through Glass Fiber Filters. These filters would later be used to estimate stable isotope values of water within kelp forests and urchin barrens as well as offshore islands across the Aleutian Island archipelago. The clear PVC was cut to contain 5-Liters of water when sealed. These bottles needed to be pressurized to force water through 0.7 um glass fiber filters. Water filtration systems either use pressure to force water or a vacuum to pull it. I wanted to make a system that would be portable and therefore be used in the field when power was not available. I mimicked a system Mark Hatay (SDSU engineer) designed to filter water and use SCUBA cylinders as power and provide pressure.
Supply list: Spare regulator to hook first stage to tank and 2nd stages to depressurize when disconnecting Low pressure hose connects to multiple fittings (LP SCUBA connector to adaptor) to a propane pressure regulator Husky propane pressure regulator Brass adaptor from regulator to nozzle to silicone tubing Silicone tubing to barbed connector (female) Connector (male) tapped into drain plug 3/4 hose caps to paracord, carabiner, velcro strap (flipped), hose clamp 4 inch clear PVC connectors as above to silicone tubing tubing to 47mm GFF filter holder Filter holder to tubing to bucket drain on boat
