saltTYPE font I have used free vector graphics of marine themed creatures, adjusted them to create letters, and then developed a marine themed font that can be used in classrooms as a teaching tool. Students could use the alphabet to spell their name and state a fact about one of the organisms that they used. |
Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML) Open House was a great way to share the excitement of the marine environment with the general public. I helped run the diving booth for 4 years where the public could try on SCUBA gear. The public could also experience what it is like to write on underwater paper using neoprene gloves in a cold water tub that simulated the ocean. |
Seeing what the marine environment is like is difficult because its not easy to go there. I have enjoyed sharing what the ocean is like by using photography. An easy way to share a place or an experience is by showing a photo. TEDx Monterey (April 13th 2012) gave me an opportunity to share what it's like to take underwater photos and talk about some of the creatures you will meet.

San Diego State University (SDSU) Coastal and Marine Institute Laboratory (CMIL) Marine Science Day was a great success with over 700 people attending March 13th 2016. The Edwards Laboratory used recycled flooring material to make an artificial kelp forest that people could walk through. We also had a booth with alginate (a starch derived from algae) that was used to make molds of shells like abalone, similar to how a dentist makes a mold of your teeth using alginate. |
